Shillong, Jan 11: The Voice of the People Party (VPP) has added its voice to those who have condemned the recent murder of Dilseng M Sangma, a member of the ACHIK pressure group, in Garo Hills.
In a press release today, VPP spokesperson Batskhem Myrboh said that the party urges the authorities to arrest the person/s responsible and ensure that justice prevails.
Sangma was killed on January 9 while a group of ACHIK members were inspecting stone quarries in West Garo Hills that were suspected of being illegally run.
Three people were arrested on Saturday with police pursuing other suspects. The state government, police and civil society groups were quick in trying to head off any attempt to communalise the murder.
Meanwhile, another pressure group, the Federation of Khasi, Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP), also condemned the murder of Sangma.
In a press statement, FKJGP Garo Hills president Pritam Arengh demanded immediate justice for the bereaved family, ex-gratia compensation and a thorough investigation into the incident. The organisation also called for the stone quarry in Rajabala where the incident occurred to be sealed and seized.
The FKJGP urged the people of the plain belt areas to cooperate with authorities in identifying and arresting those responsible, ensuring justice and restoring normalcy in the region.
