The Voice of the People Party has raised concerns over the delay in appointment of a new Chairperson of the Meghalaya State Commission for Women (MSCW) stating such an inordinate delay does not happen when installing political appointees.
The important post, which is directly linked to the welfare of suffering women, fell empty for a year now since Phidalia Toi was removed by Social Welfare Minister Paul Lyngdoh after she had supposedly taken part in political campaigning during last year’s state elections.
In the face of rape, especially of minor girls emerging the VPP said there is an urgency to keep the commission alive with a head.
VPP spokesperson, Batskhem Myrboh said there is no apparent benefit to the state from political appointees and yet the state government can do it in a jiffy.
Condemning the incidences of crime against women in the state, Myrboh said the safety of citizens, regardless of gender is crucial for the progress of the society.
Meanwhile, sources in the commission said that the delay in the appointment of the new chairperson has adversely affected the overall functioning of the commission.
“The appointment of a chairperson happens within two weeks in other states, but the government has not been able to make a final decision even after weeks of deliberation,” sources said.
