North Shillong MLA Adelbert Nongrum has once again criticised the state government for not moving the relocation of the residents of Them Ïewmawlong forward.
His statement came a few days after an incident at a restaurant in Ïewduh, near the colony, on the night of April 20, where it is alleged that several inebriated youths from Them Ïewmawlong refused to pay their bill, which led to a scuffle.
The MLA thanked the police for timely intervention and preventing the matter from getting out of hand. But, he added, “The job of the police department is not only to prevent such incidents but to show that the law is equal for everybody so that it will build confidence (of people) in the police.”
Nongrum said that people may say that these are small incidents but bigger episodes start from something insignificant.
He said that he wants to send a clear message to the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government that it has failed on this particular issue despite being in charge of the state for six years now.
“This shows the lack of seriousness and irresponsibility of those who claim to be leaders,” Nongrum, who is the local MLA, said.
Parts of Shillong were plunged into a serious riot-like situation in 2018 after an incident between residents of Them Ïewmawlong and Khasis. Ever since, the area has been guarded by police and the road running through the area has been closed off to vehicular traffic.
Extended negotiations have been held to relocate those living in the area and a deal was recently struck with the state government.
