The Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB), in collaboration with officials from the Ri-Bhoi district administration, conducted a public hearing today to gauge the concerns and sentiments of the residents of Umduba Killing village regarding the proposed stone quarry to be established by Uranus Stone Products.
Speakers from Umduba Killing, including the headman, residents and representatives from the dorbar, expressed their support, anticipating benefits for the local community. During the meeting, the district administration received over 158 letters expressing support for allowing the operation.
Company representatives assured compliance with village norms, tree planting initiatives and the creation of employment opportunities for local residents.
However, the Hynniewtrep Youths Council (HYC) voiced opposition to the establishment of the quarry. The HYC warned of lodging complaints with the Ri-Bhoi administration, Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council forest officials and the local MLA if public complaints arise.
The minutes of the meeting will be submitted to the state government for final recommendations and scrutiny.
