Shillong, Sep 8: The University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) observed the 100th birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Bhupen Hazarika with a tribute programme held on campus today.
The programme celebrated the enduring legacy of the legendary singer, composer, filmmaker, lyricist and cultural icon whose timeless creations continue to inspire generations across the country.
A special Sudhakantha Bhupen Hazarika Tribute Performance by the students of USTM, organised through the Cultural Forum, brought alive some of the maestro’s timeless musical expressions. The performance reflected the deep emotional and cultural connection that Hazarika’s music continues to share with the people of Assam and the North East.
Addressing the gathering, Mayur Bora, Author-in-Residence at USTM, spoke about the life, works and immense cultural contribution of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika who sang songs about dignity of labour. He highlighted the relevance of Hazarika’s creative legacy in contemporary times and his unparalleled contribution towards giving the voice of the North East a wider national and global resonance.
This was followed by a musical address by eminent musician Kamal Kataki, who paid a musical tribute to the legendary artiste. The programme further witnessed a dance tribute by USTM students.
