A delegation of the Meghalaya Upper Primary School Association today met Education Minister Rakkam Sangma to demand that 844 ad hoc upper primary schools in the state be upgraded to the deficit system.
Speaking to reporters following the meeting, MUPSTA president K Shadap said that this is not a new proposal, as it had been submitted first in 2019-20. The matter was delayed during the Covid-19 pandemic and Shadap said that he hoped that where the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance 1 government was unable to make the upgrade, the MDA 2 might succeed.
The minister told the delegation that the proposal will have to be looked at thoroughly and will take time.
The teachers also told Sangma that they were expecting a salary increment of Rs 18,000 but upper primary and lower primary teachers were only given a Rs 6,000 boost, while secondary teachers received Rs 9,000.
“We had urged the minister that, for the time being, the increment for LP and UP teachers should be increased by another Rs 3,000 so that it matches the Rs 9,000 (for secondary teachers). The minister told us that he will look into the matter,” Shadap said.
