Editor,
The terminology of ‘Jaitbynriew’ if we are to translate and interpolate into simple English means humanity. But this term has been depicted in a different miniscule way signifying a small minority community albeit a ‘fading race’.
However we look deeper into our nearby surroundings there is nothing much to be proud of what this terminology has promoted except fanning passionate communal flames which for too long the Khasi society has been made to imagine that we are on the verge of virtual collapse of losing our identity, both culturally and customarily as well but the truth is the mindset has not changed that we are a progressive society and not a regressive one.
There are so many areas that the Khasi society or as a matter of fact the ‘Jaitbynriew’ is lacking and we are still dependent on the non-Khasis who we portray as ‘Dkhar’ or ‘Bar Jylla’. We don’t need to be misled by propagandist ideology but to introspect and question the respective Autonomous District Councils who are supposedly the custodian of our customary, cultural and social laws.
We already have so many local laws passed but have they been even implemented in letter and spirit or have they just been an enigma of someone else’s imagination.
