The state government is contemplating a load restriction of 12 tonnes for vehicles using Umiam Bridge in order to prolong its longevity.
Currently the bridge, which is a major lifeline of the state, is undergoing repairs.
“After June 30 vehicles up to 12 tonnes only will be allowed to ply to ensure long term safety and structural stability of the bridge,” a press statement from the government said today.
The repairs are likely to be completed by June, the government informed.
According to the press statement, 60 percent of the drilling and grouting works have been completed and, as per preliminary reports, it was observed that seepage through the dam has reduced.
The statement also stated that based on the technical report submitted by IIT Guwahati and the in-situ technical assessment of the structure, the bridge bearings were refurbished by lifting the decking bridge.
“After refurbishment, the bridge has again been brought back to its original position,” the statement, which was unsigned but was forwarded by the Department of Information and Public Relations, said.
Investigation on retrofitting of the bridge girders and deck slab is also being taken up with Central Soil and Material Research Station (CSMRS) for preparation of detailed report and estimate and after submission of the report further suitable action would be taken.
The Umiam dam and bridge was constructed in 1958 and completed in 1965. During these years, the bridge has been subjected to constant traffic movement. Due to the repetitive and successive loading it has led to deterioration in the bridge due to fatigue.
The present works are being taken up under the Dam Rehabilitation Improvement Project (DRIP).
