A firefight between the United Liberation Front of Axom – Independent and police personnel from South Garo Hills took place early in the morning today, leading to the militants escaping the scene after feeling through a deep ravine.
The elusive Drishti Rajkhowa, the head of ULFA (I), is believed to have been present during the encounter.
According to reports, the incident took place at about 9:30am in the village of Bolchugre, under Rongara Police Station.
The fight between the militants and the police took place after information was received by the district police of the presence of militants near the village of Bolchugre after which a team comprising Special Force 10 personnel and armed police were sent to the spot.
The militants spotted the police team approaching them and opened fire, forcing retaliation from the police. After a brief firefight the militants fled the scene.
