The Nongrah Water Supply Scheme (NWSS) Phase-I has become a bone of contention between the opposition Congress and United Democratic Party (UDP), with claim and counterclaim over who initiated the project going back and forth between the two.
Nongrah falls under Nongthymmai constituency, whose MLA is Charles Pyngrope of the Congress. Prior to 2018 the seat was held by Jemino Mawthoh of the UDP.
Recently the Nongthymmai Block Congress Committee made its claim in the media that the NWSS was initiated by Pyngrope, but today the UDP’s Nongthymmai unit countered that by saying that the NWSS, which was sanctioned at a cost of nearly Rs 6 crore, came about thanks to the efforts of Mawthoh.
The UDP unit’s President, Ker Cajee, said that the Congress claim was made just to gain political mileage but was devoid of facts.
It was Mawthoh, he said, who was able to secure the project to alleviate the water poverty of the Nongrah residents despite being in the opposition at the time.
