United Democratic Party (UDP) General Secretary Jemino Mawthoh has stated that the party is ready for the Autonomous District Council election.
When asked about the delimitation process of the district council constituencies, he mentioned that the party’s position remains the same, emphasising that the delimitation process should be expedited and the election should be held as soon as possible.
Mawthoh told reporters recently that the UDP Members of District Council share this stance and the party is prepared for the elections.
He also expressed the party leaders’ earlier calls for the district election to be held promptly to allow people to choose their representatives in time.
Additionally, the UDP general secretary expressed hope that the committee overseeing this process will speed it up.
It may be mentioned that the autonomous district council polls in Khasi as well as Jaintia hills district councils were due in February this year but the Houses were extended for a period of six months.
Last year, the Governor had granted approval for the constitution of a delimitation committee in both ADCs and the committees are on the job.
Meanwhile, regarding the Assembly by-election for the Gambegre constituency, Mawthoh stated that the UDP has not yet made a decision.
He stated that the party is awaiting feedback from leaders in the Garo Hills sector regarding the by-poll, and will make a decision based on their feedbacks.
The Gambegre Assembly seat became vacant after the resignation of sitting MLA Saleng A. Sangma, who was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Tura parliamentary seat.
The Election Commission has yet to announce the date for the by-election.
