Incumbent Shillong MP Vincent H Pala of the Congress Party has said that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) if implemented by the BJP, would have an adverse impact on Meghalaya.
According to Pala the various laws that the BJP aims to implement as listed its election manifesto-‘Sankalp Patra’, is to divide the country into pieces by bringing in a set of laws for citizens governing personal matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption, irrespective of religion, sex, gender or caste.
While the BJP is the major player nationally, the saffron party has chosen not to field a candidate in either of Meghalaya’s two Lok Sabha seats, preferring instead to support coalition ally the National People’s Party (NPP).
“A vote to NPP means a vote to BJP. They are the same,” Pala said at an election meeting held in Khliehriat today.
He stated the Congress with 25 guarantees in its manifesto is to unite the country by looking beyond religion, language, and caste, and calls on voters to choose a democratic government.
Pala listed the promises made by the party during the meeting such as upliftment of education and health institutions, ASHAs, daily wage earners, stringent laws on illegal drug trafficking and others.
