Two minor siblings drowned in a stream at Laitkynja village, South West Khasi Hills district, police said today.
The deceased have been identified as Sukkyrhai Lyngkhoi (5) and Banshan Lyngkhoi (3).
The incident happened on November 28 at 1 pm when they were playing around in the stream, located about 100 meters from their residence. An FIR was lodged by the father today.
According to police, a 5-year-old child, Lawanbiang Lyngkhoi, was a witness to the incident. She stated that the young boy accidentally fell into the water and his elder sister tried to save him.
While she ran to inform their parents, until they all reached the stream along with the villagers, the children were drowned.
An enquiry has been tasked to sub inspector RH Koch and action will be taken as per law, police added.
