A delegation of the State BJP today called on Governor Chandrashekhar H Vijayashankar and discussed the imbroglio in the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU)
Cabinet minister and senior BJP leader Alexander Laloo Hek reviewed the steps that can be taken to address the crisis and briefed the Governor about the recent BJP delegation’s visit to the national capital and their communications with the Ministry of Education.
“It was a one-hour meeting, and we discussed the NEHU issue at length. We suggested possible actions to resolve the situation. The Governor is already informed but we explored the steps to tackle the issue,” State BJP chief spokesperson Mariahom Kharkrang said.
While acknowledging that the report from the committee is awaited and should be respected, he emphasised that the BJP’s objective is to ensure that the matter is resolved in the best interest of the university.
When asked whether the removal of the NEHU vice chancellor Prof Prabha Shankar Shukla was raised, he confirmed that it was the main topic of discussion.
It may be mentioned that the state BJP leaders recently met with Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Minister of State for Education Dr Sukanta Majumdar to discuss the NEHU issue.
A two-member inquiry committee is investigating allegations of mismanagement and administrative failures at NEHU. This committee has recently met with the NEHU Students’ Union (NEHUSU), the Khasi Students’ Union, the Teachers’ Association, the Non-Teaching Staff Association, and various university officials.
