A total of 46 persons including seven women were arrested till today for their alleged involvement in the Tura violence on July 24 outside the Chief Minister’s office, police said.
Police said four persons were arrested today that include Rakmen G Momin, Kezar Marak, Tengsrang A Sangma and Jericho Marak.
According to police, most of the arrested were BJP and TMC members. Salseng R Marak was the prime instigator for making incendiary speech leading to the violence in the event.
The other arrested persons include Trinamool Congress leader Richard M. Marak, social activist Jaynie N Sangma.
Police said the arrested persons had a role in the attack on the CM’s mini secretariat in Tura on July 24 evening when Chief Minister Conrad Sangma was holding a meeting with various organisations over their demands for a winter capital in Tura and retrospective implementation of roster system.
The violence that lasted for around three hours resulted in injuries to 18 police personnel and damage to 21 vehicles.
West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Jagdish Chelani said valuable inputs were provided by trusted members of the community which aided in the arrest. “Our friends will be rewarded for their commitment towards maintenance of law and order. Please continue to help us to help you towards development of a peaceful and violence free Tura,” he said.
Meanwhile, the West Garo Hills district magistrate has withdrawn Section 144 CrPC from 5 am tomorrow that was enforced in Tura.
Normal functioning of wine stores and fuel pumps to resume as usual, the district magistrate said.
