Shillong, Nov 14:Members of the Meghalaya Commercial Truck Owners and Drivers Association (MCTODA) have demanded that the number of local trucks transporting cement from factories in Jaintia Hills should be increased to 120 from the present 80 per day, an increase of 50 per cent.
On Thursday evening, after MCTODA, the Jaiñtia Hills Cement Manufacturers Association (JHCMA) and state government struck a deal to set a flat transportation rate of Rs 9 per tonne per kilometre, MCTODA and JHCMA representatives went to Mawryngkneng where truckers have been agitating since the end of last month to apprise those present of the terms of the deal.
However, at the meeting the associations also demanded that the number of local trucks to carry cement from the cement companies should be increased to 120 from the current 80.
The representatives of the cement companies asked the trucker associations to wait until November 21, when the next meeting will take place, before making a final call.
