Truckers have united to form the Khasi Jaintia National Highway Truck Drivers Union to be headquartered at Thangshalai, Mawryngkneng.
President of the union, GJ Basaiawmoit said the main objective of the union is to unite truckers, to stop discrimination and protect their rights.
He said the union also aims to create awareness amongst the truck drivers about the importance decent work and safe working conditions for all truck drivers, protect against violation of their rights, capacity building and empowerment for participation in the struggle for justice, to recognise their contribution towards the economy and development, fair wages, working conditions, and security, to foster and advance safety on the public roads and highways, and to do whatever is necessary to create and stimulate a fair and intelligent attitude on the part of the public concerning the business of its members.
