The State government has decided to temporarily halt the felling of trees from Anjalee-crossing to Jhalupara in the city for the purpose of widening the road.
The assurance was given by the State government through Advocate General Amit Kumar during hearing of a PIL filed by city-based lawyer Kaustav Paul in the division bench of Meghalaya High Court today.
Paul in his PIL has stated that there was a proposal to fell approximately 103 trees between the Anjalee-crossing to Jhalupara for the purpose of widening the road.
The State government through the Advocate General informed the High Court that it is the National Highways Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) which is undertaking the work.
On this, the court directed for serving of notice to NHIDCL and the other unserved respondents immediately. It also asked Dr. Nitesh Mozika, the Deputy Solicitor General of India, to look into the matter on behalf of the NHIDCL.
Since the matter will be heard again tomorrow, the State government has assured the court that further felling of trees on the stretch of road will not be undertaken before the matter is taken up.
