Shillong, Sept 18: Additional SP (Traffic) East Khasi Hills, Lovish Garg was seriously injured after being hit by a scooty in the early hours of Friday.
According to SP (City) Dangsan Khyriem, police were conducting naka checking at Urkaliar near Samkhamti petrol pump when a scooty with two males tried to evade checking and sped aggressively despite being signalled to stop.
To prevent their escape, Garg intervened. Instead of stopping, the rider accelerated and rammed the officer, causing serious injuries. He was rushed to Woodland Hospital and shifted to the HD Unit.
“The act was deliberate and appears intended to cause grievous injury and escape checking. A case for an attempt to murder is being registered,” Khyriem said.
Police suspect the accused to be KSU members. The motive for their movement at that hour is under investigation.
Police said strict naka checking will continue and any attempt to evade or attack on-duty personnel will be dealt with firmly.
