In the wake of the tussle between tourist taxi drivers from Meghalaya and their Assam counterparts over the issue of entry to tourist spots in Meghalaya, a meeting of tourist taxi associations and tourism stakeholders was held here yesterday to discuss ways and means to ensure that tourism was not impacted in the State.
The discussion focused on issues faced by tourist taxi drivers particularly the concerns raised by the All Khasi Meghalaya Tourist Taxis Association (AKMTTA) which have also been expressed to the State government.
“After extensive deliberations, the members of all organisations agreed on the importance of maintaining a peaceful atmosphere in Meghalaya for the benefit of all tourism stakeholders and visitors. They reaffirmed their commitment to ensure the safety and security of tourists visiting the State,” said a resolution passed at the meeting, a copy of which was sent to the media.
The tourism operators that attended the meeting included those from Tour Operators Association of Meghalaya (TOAM), Meghalaya Tourism Development Forum (MTDF), Tour Guides Association of Meghalaya (TGAM), Federation of Shillong Hotels (FOSH), Sohra Region Tourism Association (SRTA), Jaiñtia Tourism and Environment Society (JTES) and Ri-Bhoi Tourism and Environment Development Forum (RBTEDF).
The tourist taxi drivers that took part in the meeting included those belonging to All Khasi Meghalaya Tourist Taxis Association (AKMTTA), All Shillong Tourist Taxi Drivers Union (ASTTDU), Meghalaya Tourist Taxis Association (MTTA) and Khasi Hills Tourist Taxis Association (KHTTA).
