The Tourism Department has announced a string of activities, both traditional and modern, for the autumn season.
Two sporting events are in the mix – the North East Olympic Games from October 30 to November 6 in Greater Shillong and the Megha Kayak Fest from October 13 to 16 in Ri-Bhoi.
There will also be a ‘Boating Regatta’ in Umiam from November 2 to 6, Meghalaya International Film Festival from December 12 to 16 and ‘Winter Tales’ Festival from December 12 to 17.
The state government will collaborate with the Indian Army in hosting the regatta, which will feature around 1,500 boats taking part in a variety of competitions.
Around 75 films and documentaries, with local and regional elements, will be shown at the film festival in the presence of international cinematographers, actors and diplomats. There will also be a range of workshops and activities, with the entire event estimated to cost Rs 21.21 crore.
Traditional events such as the Nongkrem Dance (November 6) and Wangala Festival (November 9-11) will also take place.
This year, the Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival will be held from November 17 to 26. Last year’s event won awards at a Mumbai award show recently despite the negativity surrounding 2021, which saw many fans unable to gain access to the concert area on one of the scheduled days. The estimated cost of this year’s event is Rs 2.5 crore.
Other events include the Shillong Autumn Festival on the shores of Umiam Lake, Hills festival and Megong Festival.
