West Jaintia Hills and East Jaintia Hills will fall under a total lockdown from Friday evening, the respective Deputy Commissioners announced today. West Garo Hills will also see a total lockdown from 5pm today.
In WJH the lockdown, or ‘total curfew’, will run until June 1 and in EJH it will run until May 31. The order in West Garo Hills will also apply until June 1.
Inter-district and intra-district movement will be banned, though in WJH this will not apply to inter-state vehicles transiting through the district. However, these vehicles are not allowed to stop along inhabited areas.
Exemptions will exist for people going for vaccinations, movement of essential goods, essential government work, bank and post office staff, press, petrol pumps, home delivery of certain items, etc, subject to approval. Funeral gatherings will be restricted to 10 people only. The operation of locality shops will be limited.
In WGH, essential supplies to villages and localities will be managed through magistrates and development committees on weekdays. Ration shops and goods vehicles have been exempted from the curfew. Friday will see shops open only until 1pm.
WJH has seen over 500 new Covid-19 cases this month alone and EJH 375. WGH has had over 763 infections this month.
