Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remark on corruption in Meghalaya continues to be a talking point for the opposition Trinamool Congress.
Opposition leader, Dr. Mukul Sangma in his three election campaigns today in Garo Hills today said the NPP-led MDA government is responsible for corruption, to which the BJP is part of the same administration throughout.
“Everyone knows the amount of corruption this government was engrossed in, whether it was rice scam, smart meter scam, or the police vehicle scam, the list goes on. And now, Mr. Shah is terming the entire state as corrupt because of this corrupt government’s deeds of which they were a part, not us. One can see the hypocrisy clearly.”
Dr. Sangma said the union home minister’s remark that “Meghalaya is the most corrupt state in the country” was not likened by the people as the scams are perpetrated by the government.
“There’s a long list of scams perpetrated by the NPP-led MDA government, in which BJP is a part of, where BJP leaders were a part of the ministry. Were they only watching the scams sitting idle? They were the ones who formed the government in 2018 and ever since then, they were hands in gloves with the government in every scam, why did they keep quiet?” he questioned.
He said the TMC had sought for an inquiry from the Prime Minister Office with regards to the scams but nothing happened.
In Shillong, TMC candidate Elgiva Rynjah said the remark was “imprudent”.
She said the BJP is resorting to last-minute election gimmicks to fool the people of Meghalaya. “BJP didn’t take action in the past five years because they were a part of the corruption. They have sold our rights and the state while the money was going to political leaders in Delhi, Assam, and Gujarat. But now, that the elections are just around the corner, BJP has chosen to engage in empty ‘jumla- baazi’ again.”
Branding BJP as the most corrupt party, the Meghalaya TMC leader said, “BJP is the most corrupt and communal party in the whole country. The people of Meghalaya aren’t corrupted, but it is BJP that made the leaders of our state corrupted. If Amit Shah has the guts, let him send the ED to raid the politicians who are part of this MDA government.”
