The victim of sexual assault, who filed a case of rape against the North Tura, MLA, Thomas A Sangma, has lashed out at the public prosecutor for failing to oppose the anticipatory bail given to the MLA while also questioning the police for not acting on the complaints she made against people who are accused of victim shaming her on various social media platforms.
In a letter to the law secretary, government of Meghalaya, the victim stated that her case was heard on two consecutive days on June 10 and 11, with June 14 being fixed as the day of the order.
“It is surprising that despite the case being so serious in nature, law enforcement agencies and the public prosecutor (PP), who was supposed to defend the victim, never asked for police custody of the accused person. The PP, instead of prosecuting the accused, was defending him and thereby denying me justice,” said the victim in a complaint to the law secretary.
The victim also added that she had been unable to go for a medical examination due to her health condition as she was advised 15 days bed rest and 7 days of quarantine. In the meantime however, bail was granted. A complaint against this was filed with the I/O over the granting of bail to the MLA.
Further, in another letter to the superintendent of police, East Khasi Hills (EKH), the victim alleged that despite her informing the police of the names of people who were victim shaming her on social media, no action has been taken against them.
The victim named some individuals and groups who have been abusing her on social media which included Bruter Gabil Momin and Salsal Koksi in The All Garo Hills Times Now, A.chik Asongni Kobolrang, C Hisi M, Amarachi Sangma, Tamani Mitimna Kena, Ongaiaba Mo Pai, Mathew Sangma, Chra Wakmate, Sona Pot, Achura We Garo A.gitok Sangma, Debate Hours, Elli Mominz who said had been making efforts to tarnish her image.
“They have uploaded my picture with a caption, comment whereby they have used filthy and abusive language with malafide intention to tarnish my image and destroy my personality. I have lodged an FIR against them which was received and registered on Jul 5 and the I/O investigation Officer has traced out one of the accused Bruter Gabil Momin,” she said.
She expressed shock over the fact that despite the accused being identified, no efforts have apparently been made to arrest the accused.
The victim, through her complaints, has asked for action against the accused that has been named as well as the I/O for doing their job competently.
