Showing exemplary courage, a 14 year old boy saved four children from drowning in the Maweitksar river in Mawlangwir of South West Khasi Hills district on May 25.
The incident happened when four children identified as Gidian Thongni (9) Naphisadona Thongni (11) Haphibansuk Thongni (10) and Carefully Thongni (12) had done swimming into the river at around 10 am.
The boy, Kisen Wanniang was washing clothes a little distance from the river. When he heard cries for help from people, the boy rushed and soon dived in to save three children.
Wanniang managed to drag them back to the river bank safely as other people nearby also aided one of the children by throwing a cloth to grab.
While Gidian had to be taken to the Mawkyrwat Civil Hospital for further medical attention, the condition of the other three children is said to be stable.
The Mawlangwir dorbar shnong has hailed Wanniang, a Class 9 student of Presbyterian Higher Secondary School, a hero and thanked him for saving the lives of all the children.
