Drivers under the umbrella of the Meghalaya Joint Action Committee of Commercial Vehicles (MJACCV) have decided to strike indefinitely from tomorrow after the government failed to address all their grievances.
Today the state government announced that it has lifted the odd-even arrangement for commercial vehicles but that is only one straw on the MJACCV’s back, with the committee also wanting a reduction in taxes, fuel price and revision of fares upwards.
“We never got to run our vehicles during the lockdown but we still have to pay all our taxes, which is impossible,” MJACCV Chairman Wandaonbok Jyrwa said today, adding that, considering all these factors, they will stick with the indefinite strike.
Meanwhile, the Tata Sumo Tourist Taxi Drivers Association (Shillong-Guwahati) has thrown its support behind the MJACCV strike action.
Public transport is likely to be restricted to services provided by the Meghalaya Transport Corporation, which, as a government body, is outside the MJACCV.
