A surrendered cadre of the banned HNLC was arrested by police yesterday night for involvement in the collection of extortion money for the HNLC.
Sromwell Mawdoh (41) was arrested from his residence at Umpling Dongsharum in the city.
According to police, Mawdoh is working as an overground worker of the HNLC and was involved in collection of money from businessmen who received demand notes from the outfit.
It may be mentioned that police have registered cases against demand notes served by the HNLC to several business people in Shillong.
The cases have been registered at Sadar police station based on the enquiry conducted at the SP level following complaints received from the businessmen who received the demand notes.
Police said that the HNLC had demanded Rs 15 lakh from each businessman in Shillong as tax for the year 2024. It had also threatened the businessmen with dire consequences if they failed to pay.
