Shillong, Dec 16: The district administration of West Jaintia Hills sent 17 students to New Delhi on an exposure visit from 11 to 12 December with the objective of providing first-hand understanding of India’s democratic institutions, constitutional framework and governance processes, along with exposure to nationally significant institutions, scientific institutions and heritage sites.
During the two-day exposure visit, the participants visited Parliament on December 11 and attended the live proceedings of the ongoing Winter Session. Prior to the proceedings, a presentation was made to the students regarding PRIDE (Parliamentary Research and Training Institute for Democracies), followed by an interaction with the Deputy Secretary of the Lok Sabha Secretariat.
During the interaction, participants were briefed about the constitutional role and functioning of Parliament, the inter-relationship between the three organs of the state – legislature, executive and judiciary – and the role of each of these.
During the live session of Parliament, the participants observed Question Hour, during which MPs raised questions on public policy matters.
The participants also visited Rashtrapati Bhawan where they saw several prestigious halls and galleries showcasing India’s rich tribal heritage, traditional art forms, indigenous crafts and diverse textiles. The participants also observed the ceremonial halls used for hosting important national and international engagements with foreign dignitaries with insights into India’s diplomatic traditions, protocol and constitutional decorum. The visit concluded with a tour to the Rashtrapati Bhavan Museum. In the evening, participants visited India Gate.
The next day the participants attended an educational and engaging astronomy show at Nehru Planetarium followed by a visit to Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya, which provided an interactive understanding of the lives and legacies of India’s Prime Ministers and the evolution of Indian democracy.
