Shillong, Jul 26: The Post Graduate Students’ Union (PGSU) and the Garo Students’ Union (GSU) of the North Eastern Hills University (NEHU) campus in Tura have appealed the Pro Vice-Chancellor to immediately start the recruitment processes for filling long-pending vacant administrative posts.
The unions highlighted the acute scarcity of administrative personnel at the campus which they said is seriously hindering the smooth working and overall development of the campus, negatively affecting academic, administrative, and student welfare activities.
The absence of sufficient administrative staff is generating a culture of undue workloads for current employees, causing undue delays in important processes like disbursement of scholarships, release of certificates, speedy responses to inquiries, and general administrative effectiveness, the unions said.
“This inefficiency not only hampers the orderly day-to-day life of students but also undermines the morale and productivity of teachers and non-teaching employees,” they added.
According to the union, NEHU has to fill up the posts of Deputy Registrar, Personal Assistant to the Deputy Registrar, Assistant Registrar (Administration), Section Officer, Assistant, Upper Division Clerk (UDC) and Lower Division Clerk (LDC).
“The current situation is significantly hindering the development and smooth functioning of the campus,” PGSU president Chakram D. Sangma said, adding, “A competent and fully-fledged administrative team is essential to ensure efficient record-keeping, the smooth execution of campus activities, and improved student services, including more timely responses to student needs and matters related to examinations.”
Currently, NEHU Tura Campus has merely three permanent regular staff members. This severe shortage has retarded the campus’s growth and posed numerous problems for students and the larger NEHU Tura community, the union said.
