Rambrai Jyrngam MDC Bajop Pyngrope has expressed serious concerns about the increasing drug menace in Meghalaya.
He emphasized the need for the police department to be extra vigilant and proactive in addressing this issue especially Meghalaya being a transit state.
“We must implement strong mechanisms at every entry point into the state. It is essential to have modern screening machines that can specifically detect harmful substances entering our state,” he said.
He also highlighted the necessity of having a zero-tolerance policy towards drugs, insisting that screening and checks should be mandatory for all types of vehicles.
Additionally, he pointed out that the lack of international border fencing with Myanmar is a significant concern that exacerbates the drug problem.
Furthermore, Pyngrope stressed the importance of upbringing in combating the drug issue, noting that community participation and support are crucial.
He also called for collaboration between the police and the dorbar shnong to effectively tackle this menace.
On the increasing menace of theft cases, he, however, said that all theft cases cannot be blamed on the drug addicts as seen that there are syndicates that commit bigger crimes like car and two-wheeler theft.
