Statehood activist, former minister and ex-Chief Executive Member of Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), Albinstone M. Sangma passed away today at his home in Tura.
98-year-old Sangma was a close aide of the first chief minister of the State, Captain Williamson A. Sangma.
A prominent leader of the Hill State Movement, Sangma was in charge of the recruitment and training of the Non-Violent Direct Action (NVDA) volunteers in Garo Hills.
He later served as a MDC of GHADC and Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Rongrenggiri constituency in 1978.
He also served as minister in the B B Lyngdoh led government in 1979.
During the Meghalaya Day on January 21 this year, Sangma was presented with a citation by West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Ram Singh for his active part in the struggle for statehood.
