To encourage athletes, ‘Sponsor-an-athlete’ program was inaugurated by the office of the East Jaiñtia Hills Deputy Commissioner today, through which different organizations, industries, government companies, institutions, philanthropists will be encouraged to sponsor the preparation of one particular athlete.
A total of 15 sponsorships were declared in the program. Through the program, efforts will be made to cover other promising athletes as well in the future, Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal informed.
Cabinet minister and local MLA Kyrmen Shylla also announced an aid of Rs 5 lakhs to the District Sports Office which will be dedicatedly used for purchasing sports gears/equipment for the different athletes across the district.
Meanwhile, altogether 62 athletes from East Jaiñtia Hills, who won medals during the Meghalaya Games and State level Inter-School Athletics Meet, were felicitated by the office of the District Sports Officer and the District Sports Promotion Society.
Forty-four athletes were awarded Rs 5500, Rs 3300 and Rs 1700 for winning Gold, Silver and Bronze medals at the Meghalaya Games and 18 of them were given Rs 5000, Rs 3000 and Rs 2000 for winning the Gold, Silver and Bronze respectively at the inter-school athletics meet.
An interaction was also organized for athletes to share their challenges with the guests.
