The Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) will hold a special session on July 10 to discuss the likely impact of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) on the traditional systems and culture of the tribal people of the State.
During the session, the JHADC members will also pass a resolution to oppose the implementation of UCC.
It may be recalled that the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) had on June 24 passed a resolution to oppose the UCC.
KHADC Chief Executive Member Pyniaid Sing Syiem who brought the resolution during the first day of the council’s budget session said the UCC will dilute the long-standing customs and practices of the indigenous tribes of the state. Referring to Article 244 (2) and Article 275 (1) of the Indian Constitution.
Members of the KHADC said that the tribes of the State have unique custom and traditions, follow a matrilineal system, and have the traditional institutions from times immemorial, etc and have been further recognised through the various provisions under the Sixth Schedule.
They also said that the intention of the Central government to implement the Uniform Civil Code in the country will affect and do away with the tribal customs, traditions, practices, inheritance, marriage and religious freedom.
Tribal groups in the North East are worried that a Uniform Civil Code would encroach upon their longstanding customs and practices, which are safeguarded by the Constitution.
The Narendra Modi government at the Centre is considering the introduction of a bill on implementing the UCC during the upcoming monsoon session of Parliament.
