Southwest Monsoon has advanced into most parts of North East India including Meghalaya today.
With this, the country’s four-month-long chief monsoon season has commenced.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Mawsynram today received 66 mm of rainfall while Sohra received 63 mm of rainfall. Other areas which received a good amount of rainfall include Khliehriat (33 mm), Mawphlang (21 mm), Mawkyrwat (20 mm) and Ratacherra (19 mm).
The IMD also said that a cyclonic circulation lies over northeast Assam and neighbourhood in lower tropospheric levels while strong southwesterly/southerly winds are prevailing from Bay of Bengal to North East states in lower tropospheric levels.
Under its influence, fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall accompanied with thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) are likely over Meghalaya, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim during the next seven days.
It also said that isolated heavy or very heavy rainfall very likely over Meghalaya, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Sub Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim during the next five days.
