The south-west monsoon has stirred into action and set in over Kerala and advanced into some parts of northeast on Saturday, the India Meteorological Department said.
The onset of southwest monsoon took place eight days ahead of the usual June 1-mark, the department said.
The monsoon had set in over the southern state on May 30 last year; June 8 in 2023; May 29 in 2022; June 3 in 2021; June 1 in 2020; June 8 in 2019; and May 29 in 2018, IMD data showed.
“The conditions are likely to become favourable for monsoon onset over Kerala during next 3-4 days. The conditions are also likely to become favourable for further advance of southwest monsoon over some more parts of South Arabian Sea, remaining parts of Maldives and Comorin area; some parts of Lakshadweep area, Kerala, Tamil Nadu; some more parts South & Central Bay of Bengal, North Bay of Bengal and some parts of Northeastern states during the same period,” according to an IMD update.
The southwest monsoon refers to the southwesterly wind that brings rainfall to the subcontinent, typically from June to September. The onset of the 2025 monsoon marks the commencement of the season, which brings about 70 per cent of the country’s annual rainfall.
