MLAs from South Garo Hills are set to appeal to Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma to push the central government for a railway line extension to Baghmara.
Although controversial in Khasi-Jaintia Hills, railways have been introduced in Garo Hills but only up to Mendipathar, North Garo Hills, for now.
Cabinet minister Rakkam A Sangma announced today that he, along with four other MLAs from South Garo Hills, will meet the CM to submit a memorandum requesting the expansion of the existing railway network from Guwahati to Mendipathar to Baghmara and even Dhaka in Bangladesh.
He emphasised the economic potential of the project, recalling that South Garo Hills had a flourishing trade network before independence.
“Strong connectivity is the backbone of economic growth – nations like America thrive because of well-developed infrastructure,” he remarked, while also stressing the importance of establishing integrated check posts to regulate illegal immigration.
