The Achik Krima Council has demanded the removal of the South Garo Hills District Transport Officer, Tengkrang Sangma for his alleged corrupt practices.
According to the group, multiple complaints have been made by the general public that the officer is involved in illegal installation of a check gate and extortion.
“The DTO’s actions have caused immense suffering to the public, with many being held up for a year to obtain driving licenses and RCs. The daily checks by the Motor Vehicle Inspector (MVI) and police have added to the woes of the public, who are being faulted for the DTO’s actions,” Achik vice president Greneth M Sangma said.
The group has written to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and sought the immediate transfer of the officer while also urging him to investigate into the alleged corrupt practices and take action as per law.
A FIR has also been lodged at the Baghmara police station against the officer for unauthorised collection of money without receipt or valid orders.
According to Achik, an illegal check gate was installed at Masigat along the National Highway weighbridge where extortion takes place. “Specifically the DTO is illegally demanding Rs 2000 for light passenger vehicles, Rs 1500 for trucks and Rs 500 for pickup,” the group said.
