Sohra civil sub-division saw two new sites geared towards tourists inaugurated today.
The Monolith Restaurant at Mawmluh was inaugurated by Secretary to the Government Cyril V Darlong Diengdoh and, earlier in the day, the Laitiam River Side Eco Tourism Hub was inaugurated by I Rynjah, Director of Soil and Water Conservation.
Both these projects were implemented by the Soil and Water Conservation Department in collaboration with Meghalayan Age Ltd.
The Soil and Water Conservation Department, under the Sohra Ecological Restoration Project implemented during 2010-2011 to 2015-2016, took up certain activities and, in continuation, the Natural Resource Improvement Intervention Project has come up as a scheme for the promotion of ecotourism in the areas, a press release stated.
Diengdoh said that the tourism sector is a job multiplier that can generate employment for the local people and uplift the rural economy.
The project at Mawmluh village started in April 2022 and was completed in September 2023. The project includes site preparation and development and construction of a restaurant, basement staff quarters, etc, at a cost of Rs 1.39 crore.
The development of the Laitiam village project started in June 2022 and was completed in December last year. The construction includes four cottages, one open terrace restaurant, landscaping, etc, constructed at a total cost of Rs 1.51 crore.
