Shillong, Oct 13: The State government will soon set up a skywalk deck at the scenic Mawkdok Dympep Valley on the Shillong-Sohra road with funding from the Central government.
The skywalk and tourist hub at Mawkdok will be implemented under the Prime Minister’s Development Initiative for the North East Region (PM-DevINE) Scheme at a total cost of Rs 42.17 crore.
Proposed by the Meghalaya Infrastructure Development Finance Corporation (MIDFC), the skywalk project at Mawkdok Dympep Valley has been conceived to provide a captivating viewpoint to the tourists that throng the area.
The size of the site is 0.54 acres while the size of the area for development of the pedestrian skywalk deck is 2195 square metre.
A glass bridge was also conceived to provide a captivating viewpoint to the tourists that visit the spot.
There will be amenities for the tourists around the skywalk and will include restaurants and retail spaces besides parking space.
The project proposal was in-principle approved by the eight Empowered Inter-Ministerial Committee meeting held on February 28. During the meeting, the State government had assured to submit the detailed project report to the DONER Ministry.
The State government has also agreed to address all the observations of the NITI Aayog while preparing the detailed project report.
Techno-economic vetting of the detailed project report was done by the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Meghalaya.
Besides the development of the skywalk and tourist hub at Mawkdok, there are also two other projects to be implemented under the PM-DevINE Scheme in Meghalaya.
These include gap funding for passenger ropeway at Shillong Peak at a cost of Rs 58.79 crore and establishment of the Campus of Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs (IICA) at Mawkhanu, New Shillong at a cost of Rs 22.35 crore.
