South Shillong MLA Sanbor Shullai today donated essential items and Rs 10,000 in cash to each of the nine families whose homes were destroyed in the massive fire that hit Maxwelton Estate in the city last week.
Shullai said that he donated the basic requirements, such as blankets, cooking utensils, etc, on humanitarian grounds from the discretionary grant so that the families can rebuild their homes.
There have been several unfortunate incidents in the city this year, such as the death of five people in Lower Lumparing who were killed in a landslide in September, and the discretionary fund of Rs 10 lakh, which all 60 MLAs have access to, comes in handy during these times.
“The discretionary grant acts as an immediate relief to the victims of the unforeseen incidents because sometimes the assistance from the government takes too much time because of so many procedures which are time-consuming,” Shullai said, adding that there is a need to speed up the process so that victims get immediate relief.
