Shillong, Oct 10: The long-pending construction of a link road leading to Shillong Viewpoint appeared to get a fresh push today after a meeting convened by Laban-Mawprem MDC Ricky Shullai.
Shullai held the meeting with the Raid Laban Dorbar Pyllun, Hima Mylliem and other stakeholders on site.
The road is meant to be just 600 metres long but has been stalled since 2018.
“The meeting was a fruitful one,” Shullai said. “The myntris from Hima Mylliem have considered and very soon they will send the approval letter to the (Khasi Hills Autonomous) District Council. Once we get the approval from the district council, the NOC (no-objection certificate) will be available with the Raid Laban Dorbar Pyllun where they can initiate again with the government so that they can make this dream pending for many years come true.”
The proposed road is aimed at easing numerous problems faced by locals, tourists and shopkeepers in the area, he added. The road will also benefit commuters and promote tourism by providing an alternative route that will connect up to Laitkor.
Indian Air Force authorities have intermittently restricted public access to the existing road that leads to Shillong Viewpoint on security grounds, such as after the attack on the Pathankot Airbase in 2016 in Punjab, and the Covid-19 pandemic.
“Today everyone is present and we hope we do not see any issue anymore. We hope that the KHADC executive committee will take the decision to approve and once we get the NOC, that means it will be a success and many things can be initiated, especially with the government coming up with many projects to promote tourism in the area,” Shullai said.
