Shillong, Aug 3: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) has given the company responsible for implementing the Shillong Ropeway project seven days to submit paperwork proving that it has required permissions to operate.
KHADC Chief Executive Member (CEM) Winston Tony Lyngdoh today informed that he had sent enforcement officials to the project site in Riat Laban on July 28.
The enforcement officials gave seven days’ time to provide all their documents and send these to the district council for scrutiny in order to ascertain whether the firm needs a trading licence from the KHADC. To date no documents have been received from the joint venture between KEC and TCL.
Lyngdoh said that if the company cannot provide the required documents the KHADC will send enforcement officials to meet the company’s representatives and see what action has to be taken after that.
The CEM also stated that even the office of the Syiem of Hima Mylliem has asked KEC-TCL to submit community-level clearances before it can be issued a trading licence to execute the proposed Shillong Ropeway project.
“I trust the Hima Mylliem to do what is their duty,” Lyngdoh said.
According to him, the KHADC has two responsibilities in this matter – to check for trading licence and to get clarification from Hima Mylliem on what arrangement was the area in Riat Laban given to the company for the project, especially regarding permissions to cut trees.
Several hundred trees have been cut down to make way for the project, which is something that a section of locals are up in arms over.
Lyngdoh said that he will write to the Hima Mylliem to get a clarity on the issue and any action taken will be within the jurisdiction of the district council.
