Shillong, Apr 13: Batskhem Myrboh, the Voice of the People Party (VPP) candidate for the upcoming Shillong Lok Sabha seat by-election, today met members of Green-Tech Foundation (GTF) who are on a hunger strike over the Lumpongdeng Island luxury tourism project.
Speaking to reporters, Myrboh said that the VPP is supporting the movement since it aligns with the ideology of the party.
“The VPP in its manifesto has maintained the need to preserve the environment. We cannot replace the environment which will affect the future generations,” he said.
The GTF members have been on hunger strike at Malki Ground since last week.
Myrboh said that when the state government wants to bring development it has to think about sustainability and preserving the environment.
According to Myrboh, the government should understand that if it takes any policy decision it should not be done without connecting to the people first.
Myrboh stated that, as per the government’s claim, Meghalaya is the second-fastest developing state in the country but this growth has not uplifted the economy of its people.
“When we talk about development, those at the grassroots should get the benefit of such development,” he added. Instead, Myrboh opined, corporate houses, not the people, profit from the state government-led development projects.
