Celebrating the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, and under the aegis of the Union Ministry of Culture, the three-day ‘Ka Tynrai Jong Ka Longrynieng’ or the ‘Roots of Identity’ (in memory of the unsung heroes of Meghalaya programme began at U Soso Tham Auditorium, organised by Shillong Law College and Positive Energy Art Foundation (PEAF).
The event was inaugurated by Commissioner and Secretary of Arts and Culture Frederick Roy Kharkongor today in the presence of other dignitaries, artists from across the country, staff and students of the Shillong Law College, PEAF and other invitees.
“It is very encouraging to see that the programme is a mix of both culture and ideation,” Kharkongor said. “You have a lot of very interesting topics right from culture to the role of various traditional institutions. The very theme, ‘Ka Tynrai Jong Ka Longrynieng’, which talks about the roots of identity, is something which is very relevant not only for 75 years but for all time to come because we need to remember how this freedom was brought about.”
He also appreciated the central government for putting the spotlight on the unsung heroes of India’s freedom struggle, such as U Tirot Sing Syiem, Kiang Nangbah and Pa Togan Sangma, who “in a sense are precursors to the Indian national movement.”
After the official function, a national seminar on ‘Indian Independence Movement – A Milestone In Meghalaya’ was held, with former Deputy Chief Minister Bindo Lanong one of the speakers.
The national art workshop that was also conducted during the day witnessed enthusiastic and keen participation of artists from across the country.
