Shillong Lajong FC won the final of the EK Mawlong Memorial Trophy football tournament 2-0 against Benris FC at Mawlasnai football ground today.
The tournament was organised by Mawlasnai Sports Club in memory of Mawlong, a former Chief Minister of Meghalaya.
Lajong scored twice through Colinsalmon Lyngdoh (4′) and Deibormame Tongper (43′). As champions, Lajong received Rs 2 lakh in prize money, with Benris getting Rs 1 lakh as runners-up.
Individual awards were also presented to Lajong’s Rajat Paul Lyngdoh (Best Goalkeeper) and Rimankhraw Kharumnuid (Top Scorer). Colin was the Player of the Match.
Retired government engineer Ransom Sutnga was the chief guest at the final. Other dignitaries included Ri-Bhoi District Sports Officer Bobby Lyngdoh Nongbet, son of the late EK Mawlong Andrew W Lyngdoh, retired India international Aiborlang Khongjee, and others.
Mawlong was the former Umroi MLA and his contributions to the people of Raid Nongtung – primary health centre at Mawlasnai, police outpost, roads, veterinary office, etc were recognised and celebrated by the organisers.
