The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a severe weather warning for much of Meghalaya over the coming days with extremely heavy rainfall likely on Saturday and Sunday.
Heavy rain is also expected on Friday, with thunderstorms and lightning.
In view of the weather forecast, the Deputy Commissioner and Chairman of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) of South West Khasi Hills has advised the public to stay indoors and avoid outdoor activities. They should not attempt to cross flooded roads or rivers. Those in landslide-prone areas should move to higher ground immediately, avoid the slide area, and not return until authorities declare it safe. If trapped, they should contact emergency services and remain calm until help arrives.
Additionally, they should inspect their property for any signs of soil movement or cracks and ensure proper drainage around their home to prevent water accumulation. It is also important to stock up on emergency supplies, including food, water and medicines.
People are also advised to avoid non-essential travel, particularly to hilly and landslide-prone areas. If travel is necessary, they should inform family or friends of their route and expected arrival time.
On Friday, heavy rain is expected in North Garo Hills, East Garo Hills, South West Khasi Hills, East Khasi Hills, West Jaintia Hills and East Jaintia Hills. The remaining six districts are also expected to see some rain.
On Saturday, SWKH, EKH, WJH and EJH will be under red alert, with the other districts facing orange alerts.
Sunday will see SWKH, EKH, WJH, EJH, NGH and West Garo Hills under red alert, with the other districts facing orange alerts.
SWKH and EKH will continue to be on red alert into Monday, with South West Garo Hills and EGH joining them. The other districts will be under orange alert. These alert levels are liable to change closer to the actual days.
