The West Garo Hills District Magistrate has promulgated an order under Section 144 CrPC that prohibits selling and purchasing of herbicide or weedicide in bazaar or weekly markets without prior permission.
The order said the use of these pesticides is not only harmful to the fruit bearing plants and trees but also harmful for human and animals as well as aquatic life and terrestrial ecosystem. The herbicides being used to kill or control or mitigate weeds in agriculture and allied activities are toxic to plants, animals, humans and other organisms which causes health related problems in humans and also affect the environment depending on its dispersion mode and its concentration and toxicity, it added.
The order extends to the entire West Garo Hills district and will come into force with immediate effect and will remain in force until further orders.
