Editor,
Self-believe is the power which can turn the fortune towards our side .The moment we lose our self-belief, we stop exploring the potential within us. But confidence does not develop on its own. For that hard work, perseverance and a will to continue is needed. It may take minutes to know a thing, but mastering over it can take years. We often get depressed by looking at others’ success .
When someone scores more marks than us, or gets a job which we have longed for, we feel disappointed and doubt ourselves. We wonder how they have done those things which we couldn’t . Such a feeling breaks our confidence and implants negativity towards the subject , or the job we are dealing with. Instead of improving our performance , we sometimes focus more on others . We become worried thinking about what will happen if we cannot win the match ,or pass the exam. The fear of defeat makes us lose the game even against a weak opponent. But have we thought about how a player who has scored low points at the initial stage of a match , later plays well and wins at the end. It is their internal confidence , built through years of practice , which brings them back into the game from a stage where others would have given up .
A strong determination can help us go on in life even without anyone’s support . Once we start to believe in ourselves, nothing remains impossible then.
But we should know that self-belief is not an inherent trait . It is acquired through hundreds of rehearsals before a play, by practicing several years before the tournament and studying many months before the exam. Our efforts may not be visible at the initial stage. But our performance at the final match, exam or the play will reveal what we were doing all those years , when no one was watching us. Youngsters sometimes argue with the elders that they know everything and don’t need anyone’s advice . But opinions of the mentors, guardians and our well wishers plays a significant role in building self belief. When they share their experiences , it gives us the idea about how to deal and behave when difficulties come in life . This removes the fear from our mind and helps us to move forward with confidence. Books can also contribute a lot in developing our self- belief. When we read the success stories of the great personalities, we realize that they were not gifted with super powers , but were normal human beings like us. It was their patience and hard work that made them extraordinary. Their self- belief made them achieve those things in life which others couldn’t. Knowing about them can motivate us to try for those things which others usually hesitate to do. Had Hillary not believed in himself, he could have never climbed above Everest. Had Graham Bell not believed in his invention, people could have never talked to each other sitting far away today . Self -belief is required in every step of our life . Without it we will achieve very little and deprive ourselves from what actually we could have got. All it requires is our commitment and nothing else to stay firm when things are not in our favor.
