An English Medium school to be named after the Khasi freedom fighter, Tirot Sing will be constructed in North Tripura.
This was informed by the Indigenous Progressive Regional Alliance (TIPRA Motha), chief Pradyot Deb Barman today.
Tirot Sing, a tribal chief known as the Hero of the Khasi Hills’, declared war against the British for their attempts to take over control of the Khasi Hills and led an attack on the colonial forces on April 8, 1829. He was captured four years later after the Anglo-Khasi War and died in the Dhaka Central Jail on July 17, 1835. The day is commemorated as U Tirot Singh Day in Meghalaya.
It was also informed that Deb Barman has given land in the capital of Agartala, to construct offices of the three autonomous district councils of Meghalaya and to erect a statue of JJM Nichols Roy, the architect of the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.
Deb Barman also informed that the Bodoland Territorial Council will give lands to all ten autonomous district councils of the Northeast to construct guest houses or offices.
Meanwhile, following a meeting of the 10 autonomous district councils of the region held here today, Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council Chief Executive Member, Pyniaid Sing Syiem informed that a cultural exchange programme will be organised in the region to foster friendship and deepen knowledge of each other’s cultures and to strengthen relationships among the various tribes.
