BJP legislator Sanbor Shullai today sought the intervention of senior BJP leader in Assam and NEDA chairman, Himanta Biswa Sarma for withdrawal of an FIR filed against Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) by BJYM, Cachar District, Assam.
In his letter, Shullai urged Sarma to take note of the FIR filed against KSU president, Lambokstar Marngar by Amitesh Chakraborty, the BJYM President, Cachar District, Assam.
The FIR was filed at Silchar police station alleging that the KSU has displayed banners terming Bengalis in Meghalaya as Bangladeshis.
“This is in connection with the incident at Ichamati after the murder of KSU member, Lurshai Hynñiewta, and still continues to be the centre of attention and the reason for the current unpleasant and unwanted developments. An incident like this, that unfortunately happened at Ichamati should have been prevented and avoided at all costs. This has led to an uneasy calm in the city of Shillong. The matter is a state affair and involvement or influence of elements from outside the state is not required,” Shullai said.
Lurshai Hynñiewta was killed at Ichamati after a rally against the CAA held at Ichamati on February 28.
“The matter is a local concern and should be best resolved peacefully by involving all the stakeholders of Meghalaya. All genuine non-tribals of the State have always been supportive of all local issues and have been living at peace with the tribals for generations,” Shullai said.
He also said that the North East states are all raising their concerns for the influx of illegal migrants.
“A misunderstanding on such fragile issue can jeopardise the peace among the generation old genuine non-tribals of Meghalaya. The non-tribals of the State have been living in harmony with the Khasi, Jaiñtia and Garos tribes who themselves are highly peace loving by nature,” Shullai said.
Stating that withdrawal of the FIR filed against the KSU leader by the president of BJYM Cachar District, Assam would be in the best interest of the people, State and the party, Shullai said, “This will help in preventing downslide of the party and its image among its local bases.”
“Rather we should look into a peaceful way of helping and working with local authorities and agencies to tackle the illegal immigrants issue and help strengthen the communal harmony prevalent among the genuine non tribals and the tribals of the State,” Shullai stated.
Stating that he represents South Shillong Constituency which is a cosmopolitan constituency by nature, Shullai said, “I have always raised my voice to protect the interest of the tribals and also to safeguard the interest of the genuine non tribals. The matter is of serious concern and would require your kind intervention to ensure that peace and communal harmony prevails in the State.”
